The Salvation Army began the Share the Warmth Coat Drive distribution on Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, but, like so many other events during the COVID-19 pandemic, it looks different than usual.

People in need of a winter coat would have to register by calling 269-344-6119 so volunteers could get coats into bags and ready for pick up. Salvation Army Maj. Nicholas Montgomery said that they are seeing about a 115% increase in need for 2020, compared to last year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The need is great," Montgomery said. "I mean when you think of everything, obviously everywhere it's about the pandemic and we need to keep people safe but yet we need to be able to serve folks because there are folks in need."

The Salvation Army said they are also struggling to get volunteers, along with an increase in need.

The Salvation Army said they would hold more distribution events, the next being the week of Dec. 14.
