Former Kalamazoo Mayor Ed Annen died unexpectedly Wednesday morning at the age of 70.

Annen was mayor for three non-consecutive terns in the 1970's - 80's and 90's.

"My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, and that anyone who has stepped up and been willing to serve in this spot in the city of Kalamazoo gets my respect," Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson said.

His death was acknowledged by city officials on the very same afternoon that they also announced an anonymous $400 million donation to the city's Foundation for Excellence, which was established in 2017, by way of another anonymous donation in the tens of millions, to help the city maintain a balanced budget.

He presided over city hall during the infamous May 1980 tornado that killed five people and destroyed much of the downtown Kalamazoo area.

Annen was a lifelong Kalamazoo resident.
