Western Michigan University signed 20 student athletes this morning, including the highest-rated recruit in WMU history, Muskegon offensive lineman Antwan “A.J.” Reed.

Reed is a four-star recruit with an individual rating of 0.8949, according to the 247Sports composite rating calculator.

That same calculater sets the average rating of the 20 new WMU signees at 0.8264, which is the highest ever in the history of the Mid-American Conference.

Head football coach Tim Lester announced the news during a news conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday, which is National Letters of Intent day.

Reed had previously committed to Penn State, but reopened his recruitment the first week of December. He is the highest rated MAC player since 2009.

High school players are evaluated at camps and games by 247Sports and given a rating. The composite rating for each player is derived from the three main recruiting websites, 247, Rivals and ESPN. Allen Trieu, the Midwest Recruiting Analyst, said that he has seen every player Western Michigan signed.

WMU also has the MAC’s top ranked* recruiting class according to 247Sports and Rivals. (*Ranking is based on overall total points assessed to class. The amount of players a team signs can affect the overall point total. Rating is determined solely by the quality value assigned to each individual player, regardless of how many players are signed).
