SMAC soccer showdown between Gull Lake and Mattawan ends in a draw

The Gull Lake and Mattawan soccer teams faced off on Tuesday night in Richland, with the winner in position to claim the outright Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference regular season championship.

The host, the Gull Lake Blue Devils, took control early. Roni Sylejmani scored a free kick in the 21st minute to give Gull Lake a 2-0 lead.

Mattawan would answer just three minutes later. Chad Harrison beat the Blue Devils keeper to pull the Wildcats within one in the 24th minute.

Freshman Ryker Corstange scored in the 68th minute to give the Blue Devils a 3-2 lead, but Mattawan's Jack Elms would score the equalizer in the 87th minute.

The game would end in a 3-3 draw.

Mattawan, Gull Lake and St. Joseph finished the regular season in a three-way tie, but the Wildcats claimed the #1 seed in the upcoming SMAC Tournament based on the goals differential tie-break.
