The Eric Zapata Memorial Foundation announced it won’t host another EZ 5K/10K run.
The annual spring race honored the life of fallen Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer Eric Zapata. He was gunned down in the line of duty April 18, 2011.
The race raised money for scholarships for law enforcement recruits and training.
Craig Stauffer, who is with the foundation, said the organizers are just worn out. He said it takes 20 to 30 hours a week for months before the race to get everything in place, and all of the volunteers have full-time jobs.
Stauffer also said that the foundation hopes that someone will step up and take it over. He said anyone who is interested should contact the group via its Facebook page.
The foundation, a nonprofit charity, was created to honor Zapata by maintaining a memorial scholarship and making charitable contributions to the community he served.
