Dozens of Parchment Middle School students – inspired by a local author – spent some time helping strangers recently.

They are students in Meg Vollick's class. An author who visited the classroom shared stories about homelessness, and explained that a quarter of Kalamazoo County’s population is homeless children.

So the students decided to act.

On Friday, June 1, 2018, they set up an assembly line in their classroom and packed small baggies full of personal care items.

When they were done, they’d created 600 personal hygiene kits. The kits were later delivered to “The Ark” youth shelter in Kalamazoo.
