UPDATED 8:40 p.m. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan State Police now say one person is dead after multiple crashed on I-94 in Van Buren County.

Three people are in critical condition.

Police and emergency crews say that three separate crashes involving more than 30 vehicles and dozens of semi-trucks. I-94 remains closed and crews are still out directing traffic.

Police say speeds too fast for whiteout conditions are contributing factors in the chain reaction of crashes that occurred on Sunday.

The first crash happened around 2 p.m. along eastbound I-94 near Hartford. That first crash involved one semi and eight vehicles.

Moments later another crash, involving 38 cars and six semi-trucks. That crash sent numerous people to the hospital.

Police say a third crash involved six semis and twelve vehicles.

If you believe someone you know was involved in these crashes, Michigan State Police say those involved are being taken to Hartford Federated Church in Hartford.
