WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Dangerously low temperatures and near white-out conditions caused a mess on the roads Monday morning.

But some still braved the weather and made the most of a day off.

The temperatures are bitter cold and the roads were a mess, but visibility has improved as the day has worn on.

Despite the frigid weather, many made the most of the day, taking in the beauty West Michigan had to offer.

With howling winds and negative wind chills today, West Michigan's scenic lakeshore felt like another planet Monday.

One only a handful were willing to brave the extreme.

"I got them all here just to take a drive and take a look at the coast in the winter," said Craig Hess, who drove in from Jackson.

Hess bundled up to take in the beauty of the big lake from south beach, making the drive in from Jackson on his day off just for the scenery.

"I got them all here just to take a drive and take a look at the coast in the winter," he said. "I figured everything would be pretty well, I stop, it looks pretty cool."

Another family we spoke to Monday visited Grand Rapids from out of state, driving out of their way to see nature's ice sculptures.

"The big waves. I don't know how close well get. But it's cool," said Carrie Jeter, of Indianapolis.

They were making the most of the winter weather.

"I think you gotta make the best of it; you're stuck living here, you might as well enjoy it, to me this is beautiful," Hess said.

But all agree, while it's beautiful, the time spent outside is limited.
