A World War II veteran is getting the military honors he deserves decades after his death.

Private Robert Ray Shellenbarger was given a ceremony with full military honors at Hastings Township Cemetery on Friday.

Shellenbarger served stateside in World War II as a mechanic at three different military bases.

During the memorial, Shellenbarger's son, Elden, was presented a victory medal for his father's service.

Elden said, “It means a lot to me because like all veterans he's finally getting the recognition of the service to our country."

Elden says medical issues prevented him from being able to enlist in the military like his dad. He says the service on Friday is his way to honor his father's legacy.
