Portage firefighters responded to a fire at a warehouse on Vanderbilt Avenue near Shaver Road Tuesday night.

Fire crews from Pavilion, Oshtemo, Portage, Schoolcraft and Texas Township were called out at 9:35 p.m. Tuesday after a J. Rettenmaier warehouse caught fire on Vanderbilt Avenue.

A large crowd built up as the flames lit up the night sky. One person told Newschannel 3 he drove up from Schoolcraft, around five and a half miles away, after seeing the flames.

The warehouse was located next door to the JCR Off-road business on Shaver Road.

Portage Assistant Fire Chief Stacy French said there were no reported injuries, and the fire was contained to just one building. He said the owners told fire fighters the warehouse contained finished paper products. French said the building appeared to be a total loss.

He said it's unclear what started the fire at this time, and detectives had not been able to start their investigation as of Aug. 14, 2019.
