A reserve police officer in Niles died Sunday after swerving to avoid hitting a cat that ran across the road.

According to the press release, Kenneth Ray was driving a motorcycle yesterday evening with a 44-year-old female passenger when a cat ran across the road at 17th Street near Broadway. Ray lost control of the motorcycle and tipped it on its side.

Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was treated and released.

Niles Mayor Nick Shelton said Ray was a Reserve Sergeant and served the city for 24 years:

No other vehicles were involved, and police said helmets weren't worn when the crash happened.
