Kalamazoo County is a little bit safer because of Lt. Gretchen Mayo.

Mayo was nominated by a longtime friend and coworker for the CW7 Crime Fighting Women Contest.

She has been a dedicated public safety officer for years and has been recognized several times for going above and beyond her required duties.

She is also currently battling multiple sclerosis.

Mike Moore, the friend and coworker who nominated her, said she never lets her illness hinder her service to our community and is always recognized as a leader and protector for the neighborhoods she patrols.

Moore referred to Mayo as a member of his family.

He said Mayo was also extremely supportive while his late daughter and fellow officer, Lisa Zuk, battled breast cancer.

Mayo was celebrated on October 3 at the Newschannel 3 studio with a brand new Smart LED TV.
