The Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners approved a monetary settlement with a former Kalamazoo County deputy after he filed a lawsuit against Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller.

The Board signed off on a $70,000 settlement with Thomas Swafford, who filed a federal lawsuit in 2017.

Swafford claimed Fuller removed his police powers as retaliation for running against him in the 2016 primaries.

Fuller challenged the suit, but a judge ruled in 2018 that Fuller had to reinstate the former deputy.

The settlement agreement would be drafted and signed by both parties before it would be filed in the U.S. District Court to close the case.

Colin Nyeholt, Swafford's attorney, said, “I’m satisfied with the outcome and feel what happened needed to happen.”
