Kalamazoo city leaders discuss AMC Theaters moving into Alamo space

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Movie-goers are getting animated after Newschannel 3 confirmed AMC Theaters is moving in and renovating the former Alamo Drafthouse in downtown Kalamazoo.

It's sure to be one of hottest tickets in town, since the Alamo Drafthouse closed in April.

AMC isn't only moving in--it's making changes so that you and your family are comfortable and well-fed during the show. The construction confirms it.

In just a few months, AMC will open its third location in West Michigan, promising a "pristine" look and feel for the new AMC Kalamazoo 10 Theater.

"It is absolutely a critical component of our downtown entertainment mix," said Downtown Kalamazoo Incorporated President Andrew Haan.

Haan sees the theater's value as more than just the price of a movie ticket. He points to recent growth in downtown's residential sector; luxury lofts at the new Peregrine 100 building; and the 15-story development project on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Rose Street, which will also offer housing.

"It's important that we continue to cultivate, nurture the entertainment sector, our dining sector and really work proactively to balance that mix of downtown uses," Haan said.

According to AMC, the re-model will include power-recliner seats, ticketless entry, and the latest in sight and sound equipment.

And as the new concession area takes shape, it will serve more than just popcorn and pretzels. It says it's exploring the option of specialty cocktails, beer and wine.

AMC already has two other theaters operating in Holland and Grand Rapids. But will its Kalamazoo story have a Hollywood ending?

"With the nation's largest theater operator having faith in this market, I think that bodes really well for our community," said Haan.

You won't have to wait very long to buy your ticket, as we're told the new and improved theater will make its premiere in late fall.
