Grand Rapids shooting victim dies after being rushed into surgery

A 23-year-old died after a shooting in Grand Rapids Friday, Oct. 16, 2020.

In a written statement, Grand Rapids police said the victim arrived at Mercy Health Saint Mary's in critical condition and was rushed into surgery before succumbing to their injuries.

Around 9:14 p.m., Grand Rapids police were sent to the 700 block of Watkins Street Southeast on a call about gunshots.

When they arrived, the officers found several shell casings in the area, along with evidence that the victim and others had been outside when the gunshots began.

According to the statement, additional officers were sent to the hospital to check on the victim before the victim was pronounced dead by doctors.

Officers said there was no suspect information, and they didn't know where exactly the shots came from. They said vehicles and homes in the area were damaged by bullets.
