Grand Rapids Police said Friday a fight on the sidewalk, which resulted in injures to a suspect, was not in violation to its use of force policy.

Police said they found two individuals passed out and impaired in a stopped car in the road at Delaware Street SE and South Division Avenue about 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2020.

One of the passengers had a handgun and refused to cooperate with police, they said.

Officers used force to arrest him, which left cuts and bruises on the man's face. Two officers also received minor injuries.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Payne said he reviewed the incident and determined there was no violation of the department’s use of force policy.

The driver was taken into custody for operating under the influence.

Officers said they also found another handgun, marijuana and cocaine in the car.
