Fire damages Mills Street home in Kalamazoo while occupants are away

Smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the home when public safety officers arrived at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire at the home in the 1000 block of Mills Street was on both the first and second floors, but firefighters contained it within about 25 minutes of arrival. Public safety teams were at the scene for an hour.

No one was injured, and the occupants were away at the time of the fire, reported officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

Investigators said they did not immediately know the cause of the fire.
