The Battle Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Michigan Works Southwest will host a virtual forum Sept. 17, 2020, with about 25 employers from a variety of industries.
Battle Creek VA Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist Brent Larsen said a lot of veterans, especially those fresh out of the military, tend to bounce around from job to job, looking for a purpose.
“When veterans get into companies that don’t have those types of opportunities or a culture that’s really welcoming of veterans, they often don’t make it," Larsen said. "They don’t find that sense of purpose that comes with work.”
The unemployment rate for veterans jumped to over 12% during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Larsen said the economic downturn can increase depression, anxiety and suffering for everyone, but especially veterans. He said giving veterans a sense of security with a job and health insurance during this time can go a long way.
The virtual job far will run from 9 a.m. to noon.
The event is free to job seekers who have served in the military regardless of their discharge status, event organizers said.
Veteran job seekers are encouraged to register on the virtual career fair site prior to the event to upload their resume and connect their LinkedIn profile.
